The sentence underneath comparison
And the quieter thing we could teach instead.
When we compare our child to another, we believe we are motivating them. We are not. We are quietly teaching them that love is conditional on rank.
The older traditions understood this. They spoke of each child as a seed of a different tree — to be tended, not measured against the one growing next door.
The sentence underneath
Comparison is rarely about the other child. It is a sentence about the watching parent's own unrest. When we make peace with our own path, the urge to rank our children softens on its own.
Try, for a week, to notice your child only as themselves. You may be surprised by how much there was to see.
